Iowa Central Prepares for Share What You Wear

Each year, Iowa Central Community College students, faculty and staff come together in a joint effort for the annual “Share What You Wear” event.

The 18th annual event is set for Saturday, December 3 from 9 a.m. until noon in the Career Education Building on the Iowa Central Campus. Donations are currently being accepted and may be dropped off on designated days throughout the month of November.

A campus-wide community focused event designed to assist those in need over the holiday season, Share What You Wear will accept donations of new or gently used clean clothing, boots, shoes, coats, gloves, hats, toys, school clothes, baby items, usable household items, men’s and women’s work clothes, sheets, towels, blankets, travel-size soaps and shampoos and school supplies.

“This event has grown each year, as the need in our community has grown,” said Jenny Shivers, Director of Student Services at Iowa Central. “The doors are open Saturday morning to anyone who is in need. We serve breakfast and lunch free of charge  and they can take as much or as little as they need”.

The campaign allows those in need or experiencing tough economic times to provide some holiday cheer for their loved ones. It is also the largest community event of the year for Iowa Central. Donations may be brought to the drop-off location at the Career Education Building where the storage trailer is located from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Drop off dates include Thursday, November 17, Tuesday, November 29, and Thursday, December. On Friday December 2, items may be dropped off during set-up in the Career Education Building from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This is a campus-wide community service event that allows Iowa Central to give back to the communities that provide so much support to the college,” said Shivers.

Toys and new items that can be wrapped as gifts will also be accepted.

“The best part is to see the faces of so many children that get to take home a toy or wrap a present they have picked out for their parent to put under the tree,” Shivers said.
