Description:

The City of Fort Dodge is currently seeking seasonal laborers to fill summer positions in Public Works. 40-hour/week positions are available in Traffic Safety, Streets and Utility Systems. Interested applicants should apply immediately as interviews will begin before the positions close. A pre-employment, post-offer drug screen, physical and background check are required of all selected candidates. 

Examples of Duties

The following duties are normal for this position depending on the department.  They are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be assigned:

  • Cleans and constructs gutters, culverts, sewers and other drainage structures;
  • Loads and unloads refuse, stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipe, timber and heavy mechanical equipment and transports to job site or garbage dump;
  • Patches streets by shoveling mix off truck, placing in hole and tamping;
  • Assists in work such as plumbing, carpentry, welding, electrical, auto repair, and concreting;
  • Shovels and sweeps streets, gutters and sidewalks by hand;
  • Mows lawns with hand power and riding mower;
  • Rakes leaves and cuts brush;
  • Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance and construction of sidewalks, streets, sewers, water mains and parks;
  • Works with rodding crew in the cleaning of sewers;
  • Digs post holes and sets posts;
  • Sprays chemicals as directed;
  • Plants shrubs and trees and prunes and trims of removes them as required;
  • Repairs, erects and removes fences, signs, park and playground equipment;
  • Does related work as required.
