In observance of Black History Month, the vocal music ensembles at Iowa Central Community College will be hosting “Spirituals, Jazz & Folk Songs: A Black History Month Celebration,” concert.
The performance will take place on Friday, February 17 at 7 p.m. at the Fort Museum Opera House.
“This will be a concert of celebration with some of our favorite jazz, folk and spiritual songs,” said Will Lopes, director of vocal music at Iowa Central. “The Black History Month Concert was created to celebrate African American history, music, style and literature.”
The concert will feature each of the four vocal performance ensembles: Concert Choir, Encore Singers, Pop Voices, and Vocal Jazz performing both familiar and not so well-known spiritual and folk tunes, soloists, and a guest appearance by the newly formed Brazilian Jazz Project.
Encore Singers will perform their rendition of the traditional spiritual “Dry Bones,” accompanied with the Jazz Project. “Soon A Will Be Done” and “Steal Away” will be performed by a mixed ensemble of singers and Pop Voices will sing “City Called Heaven.”
“This will be an uplifting and engaging musical experience for those who really enjoy choral music, jazz and folk,” said Lopes.
Admission to the concert is free with a freewill offering accepted to offset costs of using the venue.
