The Iowa Central Rodeo team will be returning to action this fall following a successful 2021-2022 run in the national collegiate rodeo circuit.
The Tritons 34 traveling member line-up includes 15 returning participants.
The team will kick off its season at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo at the University of Wisconsin River Falls Sept. 9-10. The rodeo is the first of six the Tritons will compete in for the fall season.
Participants will enter nine events in the rodeo: three womens events including breakaway roping, barrel racing and team roping and six mens events- bareback riding, saddle bronc, bull riding, tie down roping, steer wrestling and team roping. The Tritons compete within the Great Plains Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. They finished first in the regular season regional mens team standings while the women finished the 2021-22 regular season in fifth place.
Head Iowa Central Rodeo Coach Bridget Lambright-Coleman said the team has been working hard toward pursuing the goal of qualifying as a team for nationals, which wrap up the season in June.
“You want to try to win the region,” said Coleman. “The top two teams in each region advance to the College National Finals Rodeo, along with the top three in individual events.”
In the previous season, the Triton men finished second in the nation in junior college team standings.
Coleman said the regions are not separated by school division in competition.
“When we compete, we are up against four-year schools,” she said. “Iowa Central is the only community college in Iowa that offers rodeo right now.”
The rodeo team will compete at River Falls Friday and Saturday, Mid Plains Community College in North Platte, Neb. Sept 16-17; Dickinson State University in Dickinson, ND Sept. 30-Oct. 1; Buena Vista University in Alta Oct. 21—22 and finish out the fall season in Fargo, ND at North Dakota State University on Nov. 4-5.
The Tritons will host their home rodeo, the Triton Stampede, Friday and Saturday Sept. 23-24 at the Webster County Fairgrounds in Fort Dodge. The event is an opportunity for rodeo team members to showcase their home facility to a crowd of collegiate rodeo participants and supporters.
“There are 17 schools in our region,” said Coleman. “We can expect around 300 contestants. Our kids, they do a good job. They go out and get their own sponsorships and raise their own funds for our home rodeo.”
