Week 5 Water Main Flushing FAQ

Week 5 Water Main Flushing FAQ

The most common calls and questions we receive when opening hydrants and flushing mains are about water color. Why is my water discolored?!

It happens. The crud that got stirred up gets pulled into your water lines, causing discolored water. You can help lessen the effect by not using water while we're in the area.

If you do find your water is a lovely shade of yellowish-brown, open up your tap closest to your meter (if possible) and run COLD water until the water runs clear. You may need to wait and try it again if it takes in excess of 15 minutes to clear the water. Avoid using a tap with a water filter to keep the sediment from clogging your filter. Also, stay away from running hot water so you don't draw the crud into your water heater.

Still having trouble? Give us a call. (515) 576-4551, Public Works option.
