Iowa Central Student Senate takes part in seminar

Icccccc

Iowa Central Community College recently issued the following announcement.

Members of the Iowa Central Community College Student Senate took in a day at the Capitol in Des Moines recently.

The students toured the building and were able to watch as legislators worked on bills during a Student Legislative Seminar.

Along with meeting State Senator Tim Kraayenbrink, who represents Fort Dodge and the 5th District in the Iowa Senate, the group toured the Capitol and networked with students from across the state.

“We are very grateful for Dr. (Jesse) Ulrich and Mr. Jim Kersten for accompanying us and for all their support,” said Jaedyn Condon, Iowa Central Student Body President. “Mr. Kraayenbrink took us all up to the top of the capitol building, which everyone thought was an incredible experience. We are so thankful for the time he took with us.

“We got to learn some of the processes of the bill writing and how those bills get passed. We also got to understand how the representatives and senators balance their everyday lives. We got to see how easy it was for us as citizens to be able to come, sit in on sessions and talk to our elected officials.”

Along with Condon, Matthew Helmers, Christian Brudvig, Kyla Beyers, Abby Chalstrom, Hayleigh Fry, Izaiah Martinez, Ashly Wiegand and Kadrick Kinne took in the trip.

“Overall, it was an amazing experience that we were all very thankful for,” Condon said.

The Student Legislative Seminar is an event that has been held for over 30 years that brings together students from Iowa’s community colleges to the Capitol City to build student leadership skills and abilities, engage students in state legislative advocacy and help students network across the state.

Students were introduced in the House and the Senate, along with hearing from guest speakers and a panel discussion.
